In May 2026, Heldenhuis opened its doors on the Sint-Janneke site in Eeklo. This unique small-scale residential project, designed by EVR Architecten, offers a warm home to twelve young adults with intellectual disabilities. For a care project like this, safety, comfort, and optimal energy management are essential. To align these elements seamlessly, an extensive building management system from Qbus was selected.
Read on to discover how smart automation plays an indispensable role in modern care architecture, and how the technologies used at Heldenhuis can also be applied in your own residential or commercial project.
A safe and intelligent home for twelve heroes
The Heldenhuis project is the result of a collaboration between EVR Architecten and installer Carvelec. The goal is to create a living environment where the residents—the twelve heroes—can live as independently as possible, with the reassurance of expert support always in the background.
To make this possible, Carvelec installed a fully integrated Qbus system. This building management system connects all of the building’s technologies. From lighting and heating to dedicated care functions, everything communicates through one clear and centralized protocol. This not only makes the building smarter, but also significantly more user-friendly for both residents and care staff.
Efficient integration of climate control and lighting
A comfortable indoor climate is essential to the residents’ well-being. That is why the ventilation is fully controlled by the Qbus system.
Climate control via Modbus
The Viessmann heat pump is connected through the Qbus SER485/Modbus module. This enables precise monitoring of heating and cooling demand. The temperature in the various rooms is continuously measured by discreetly integrated temperature sensors (SEN01NTC), allowing each zone to be optimized individually. In addition, the smart SENMAX motion detectors measure not only occupancy, but also CO2 levels in the common areas. As soon as air quality declines, the ventilation system, including summer bypass, responds automatically. Screens and a weather station were also installed to maintain a pleasant indoor climate.
Atmospheric and functional lighting
Lighting in a care environment must be both atmospheric and functional. In the living and multipurpose spaces, all lighting circuits are dimmable to create the right ambiance at any time of day. In the corridors, the lighting has an added signaling function: at each room, a signaling light (RGB LED) is installed and can be controlled individually for care alerts.
"We are proud of the implementation of the Qbus system at vzw Heldenhuis. It allows us to create a comfortable living environment. By connecting all building technologies seamlessly, we provide additional safety for both the residents and the caregivers.”
Care and peace of mind come first
Technology proves its true value when it makes life safer and more carefree. At Heldenhuis, the integration of care home automation is central.
When a resident needs help, all it takes is the press of a button in the room. The Qbus system immediately sends a message via the Qbus Control app, which is made available to parents and those responsible. The signaling light at the room door lights up in a specific color, and on a central tablet, staff can instantly see which room requires assistance. These functionalities provide tremendous peace of mind for everyone involved.
Energy monitoring for the future
Sustainability is a top priority in modern buildings. Heldenhuis uses extensive energy monitoring to closely track consumption and reduce it wherever possible.
Qbus’s Luqas energy manager controls the heat pump intelligently. This helps prevent unexpectedly high energy bills and ensures optimal performance of the technical installations.
Prepare your building for the future
Heldenhuis in Eeklo proves that smart building automation is much more than a luxury; it is an essential tool for comfort, care, and energy efficiency. Through the seamless integration of lighting, climate control, and care functions, Qbus demonstrates how technology can truly think along with people.
