Frequently asked questions

  • How do you read an existing configuration?

This is a completely different procedure depending on the type of controller.

    • For the CTD controllers this goes as follows:

In the SMIII via "File" or "Utilities / Setup / SD card", click on "Recover QDB from SD".

After confirmation you choose the name and location where the file should be saved. The zipped QDB file is then read from the SD card of the CTD and saved. With a positive answer to the question "Unzip and open restored QDB?", All data will then be immediately available. If the data you were still working on was not sent or saved, you will first receive a notification to do so.

    • For a CTL controller follow the following procedure:

Because this controller does not yet have a large memory, only limited data can be recovered. Ao the names are abbreviated to 12 characters and serial numbers are not stored anywhere.

The first step is therefore to type in ALL serial numbers via SMII via "File / Modules". These 6-digit serial numbers can be found on every module (DIN rail, switch, detector, etc.). For the SWC0x switches, an extra option was provided to have them send their serial number via “Search for modules”.

When you then click on the "down arrow", you can read all this limited information.

  • Always use the latest software for configuration.

It is always recommended to use the most recent version. This version supports the newest modules and resolves all known bugs.

If, for example, you enter a serial number and the correct module information does not appear, you are likely not working with the most recent software.

A newer version will always be able to open the older files (.QDB) without data loss.

The latest version of the System Manager software, along with the user manual and version history, can be found in the knowledge center.

Technical info for installers

  • Function description

The module has 5 potential-free inputs for connecting standard push buttons (N.O.). Input 1 to 4 control the outputs 1 to 4 accordingly. The A input functions with a pulse between 0.7sec and 3sec as an "All Off" command. A long pulse > 3sec on the A input functions as an "All On" command. By linking the A inputs of different Stand-Alone modules, multiple outputs on different modules can be controlled in groups.

The REL04SA, like every Qbus module, has a unique serial number that is entered during configuration in the configuration software System Manager III. All programmed data remain internally stored in permanent memory.

The functionality of the outputs is limited to being modifiable in Stand-Alone mode via the buttons on the module's front. For the REL04SA series (manufactured 2012 – 2024) with serial numbers 05xxxx or 06xxxx, a choice in SA-state can be made between an "On/Off" (Bistable mode) or 2 button Shutter mode (ROL02T). The updated REL04SA series with serial numbers starting with 0040, have additional SA functions such as forgetting timer and staircase switch.

The operation of input A can be adjusted when the REL04SA is connected to a Qbus CTD controller using the Qbus configuration software (System Manager III). This allows you to set input delays, as well as a cascade time for the entire module between 0 and 254 seconds. You can also determine per output whether it may or may not be controlled by an "All Off" and/or "All On" command on the A input.

The cascade control avoids peak load when many lighting circuits are controlled simultaneously via input A, for example. Once these changes have been programmed, the module can be disconnected and continue to operate Stand-Alone with these settings. Additionally, there are 4 connections where you can connect LED feedbacks with a suitable external power supply with a voltage of 5-24Vdc.

If relay contacts 1&2 and/or 3&4 of the REL04SA are set as shutter control, the module does not allow an Up and a Down contact to be controlled simultaneously. It is also not possible to quickly switch between an UP command and a DOWN command. The module protects the motors against undesired rapid switching, which could damage or disrupt a motor.

The operating modes of the REL04SA can be adjusted via the buttons on the module or through a temporary or permanent connection with a CTD via System Manager III.

If a CTD is connected, the Stand-Alone menu is no longer usable.

For REL04SA modules with a production date from 03/2025, the choice in Stand-Alone is expanded (s/n from 0040B18C05). Modules with serial number 0040xxxxxx, but without the expanded menu, can obtain it via a firmware update through a Qbus CTD. You now have the choice of 4 operating modes in SA use. In addition to "On/Off" (Bistable), these also feature the "Forgetting Timer" (Timer1), "Staircase Timer" (Timer2), and the classic "Shutter Mode" (Rol02T). See further under "3. Installation and wiring – Manual control".

If the module is restarted after a power outage, the outputs will be in their last position.

Click the module onto a DIN-rail DIN EN50022.

    REL04 SA met DIN
  • Power supply

CAUTION: DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY TO THE MODULE BEFORE WORKING ON THE MODULE!
A two-pole automatic circuit breaker with a maximum C16A rating must be connected to the 230Vac module power supply. Conductor cross-section: minimum 1.5mm² at 16A. Strip approximately 7mm of insulation from the conductor and screw the conductor into the connector L-N.

  • Load

The REL04SA is suitable per relay contact for direct powering and controlling of loads with a power capacity of 16A (cos. phi = 1). The relay contacts are single-pole and potential-free. Both solid and stranded wires can be used. Connect the load as shown in the figure on the next page. The cross-section of the conductors is a minimum of 1.5mm² with a maximum protection of C16A.

Remove approximately 7mm of insulation from the conductors and screw the conductors into the connectors. For stranded wire, ferrules must be crimped onto the stranded wires before inserting them into the terminal blocks. A flat-head screwdriver of 0.5mm x 3mm can be used to tighten the terminal block screw.

Only switch on the power after all connections have been checked and the outputs are connected.

  • SA inputs

Remove approximately 7mm of insulation from the cable and insert the cable into terminals 1 to A. Both solid and stranded wire between 0.5 – 1.5 mm2 can be used; for inserting stranded wire, press on the designated area of the terminal with a screwdriver while inserting the wire. To release and remove wires, press on the designated area at the top of the terminal with a screwdriver and pull the wire back.

  • Stand-Alone LED feedback

An external 5-24Vdc power supply can be connected to the REL04SA to provide LED feedback for the directly connected push button(s), for example.

REL04 SA SA terugmelding en drukknoppen
  • Bus connection

It is recommended to use the Qbus cable or any other cable with a minimum of 2 conductors of 1mm² as the bus cable. The green shielded EIB cable can also be used if the conductors are paired to achieve a minimum cross-section of 2 x 1mm².

Wiring diagram

  • Stand Alone

    Option 1: Stand-Alone

You can wire and use one or more Stand-Alone modules. There is no limit to the number of Stand-Alone modules that can be linked via the atmosphere input A. Combinations with other types of Qbus Stand-Alone modules to connect the atmosphere input A ("All-OFF" / "Panic" button) are also possible without limitation. Keep the wiring between push buttons and SA modules as separate as possible from other wiring, or preferably use shielded wiring. Under normal conditions, SVV wiring is sufficient for connecting push buttons.

The push buttons for operating the outputs, as well as the corresponding LED feedback, are directly connected to the module.

Option 2: Multiple Stand-Alone with Interconnection of Inputs A

If you want to connect multiple modules from the same Stand-Alone/star wiring and/or wish to interconnect the A-input, you must always interconnect the C (Common) between the modules! Failing to interconnect the C-input among the different modules can cause malfunctions.

  • SA configuration

To change the configuration in Stand-Alone use (i.e., without a connected CTD!), certain settings are available for each relay output using the buttons.

Once the module is in configuration mode, you can select the operating mode type or duration for each output. To modify the selection, repeat the procedure to enter configuration mode.

To set the module into configuration mode, follow this procedure:

    1) Turn OFF the outputs (= the orange LEDs are off).

    2) Press and hold buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously => The red STATUS LED will start blinking rapidly for 5 seconds. After these 5 seconds, the red STATUS LED on the module will begin to flash at a slower pace.

    4) Once the red STATUS LED has blinked twice at this slower pace, release the 1st button while keeping the 2nd button pressed. Let the red STATUS LED blink 2 more times before releasing the 2nd button.

The red STATUS LED continues to blink: the module is now in configuration mode for 10 seconds or longer if changes are made.

    5) Now press the button for each output the number of times corresponding to your choice from the tables below

The orange LED next to the button lights up each time it is pressed. The following table shows the number of times you need to press the button to achieve a desired setting. Configuration mode stops after no changes are made for 10 seconds.

    Select mode Number of presses

  • Via System Manager III

Each modules has an unique serial number. By this number the System Manager recognizes the modules.

This is completely explained in our knowledge center.

The REL04(SA) has 4 normally open contacts, on which max. 16 A and 230 V (cosϕ=1) can be connected. These are independently working contacts, each of which can be assigned a separate function by means of the system manager.
The REL08 has 8 changeover contacts (Normally open or normally closed contact can be connected as desired)

When you have entered the serial number in the modules window, the following window will appear.

Qbus System Manager III Manual Update 04 2025 pdf image 266

The I/O’s can be created in the “modules” section of the System Manager or in the “I/O’s” section. The Mode here refers to the various types of I/O’s, bistable, thermostat, timer, etc.

ATTENTION: a REL04(SA) and REL02SA/230 only have make-contacts. For safety reasons, it is NOT recommended to control electric motors (for roller shutters, curtains, etc.); this requires a REL08, ROL01PSA, ROL02(P)(SA) or ROL04PSA.

When you set the properties of the module to “SA – xx I/O”, you can prepare the module to work stand-alone. The following image shows these possible settings of a REL02SA/230
